Lemon Hole

Lemon Hole

Lemon Hole is not a preserve of the MAKC. It is on the Forbes State Forest and is owned by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry. This cave is gated and is closed seasonally to protect hibernating bats. This cave is a vertical cave, meaning there is a pit entrance with a drop of approximately 38 feet. Persons rigging a rope to the tree above the entrance and rappelling into the cave should know how to ascend to exit. The vertical caving skill of changing over should be a priority for the first person down the rope, as on occasion, the local rattlesnake somehow makes its way into the bottom. Thus the first person down needs to know this important skill. Local caving clubs, called grottos, (go to caves.org) can often provide expertise to the neophyte. MAKC  helps the BOF look after the cave, especially when it comes time to close the cave at the end of September. Volunteers are always needed to go caving with us and help close the cave.
