Permit Application for Scientific Studies at MAKC Preserves.

Permit Application for Scientific Studies at MAKC Preserves.
Step 1 of 2
MAKC requires minimum 30 days notice as well as the opportunity to have one of our members accompany you.
Owned caves require review of the Science Committee and then approval of the MAKC Board of Directors. The Board meets quarterly in February, May, August and November. Both the board and committee should be given time to review the request.
Leased cave permits require approval of the landowner, then review of the Science Committee and then approval of the MAKC Board of Directors. The Board meets quarterly in February, May, August and November. The landowner, the board and the committee should be given time to review the request. If a preserve is not listed on this drop-down menu, it means that the owner does not wish to have ANY studies conducted on the preserve.
The MAKC has NO jurisdiction over studies in any of these caves. The Conservancy only has an affiliation with these caves in order to help the owners with projects and access as determined by the owner. Those who fill out this form in relation to ANY of these caves should be aware that it will be forwarded directly to the owner or owner's representative, and that person will be responsible for determining any approvals. In these cases, MAKC is happy to serve as a liaison.
• MAKC’S management plans for all preserves require a preliminary report within 30 days of the conclusion of the field work. • If your study continues longer than 365 days, you must submit an extension on this same form, citing your initial proposal & date of submission. Caves weren’t formed overnight, and we understand that your study may continue over a period of years. However, MAKC requires a progress report and update on your study annually.  • Copies of your study should be mailed to MAKC at 137 E. Campbell St., Blairsville, PA 15717 for inclusion in our library and for our records. • Your study’s progress reports and results, written for a general audience, should be submitted for publication in MAKC’s Karst Chronicle. • Within two years after completion of your study, MAKC requests a summary of publications in which your study appeared and a copy of that publication for our library. • MAKC requests specific cave locations and directions be omitted from publications and suggests references be limited to township, borough or other municipality, county and state. If there is a reason for publishing the specific location, please list it below.
