The Mid-Atlantic Karst Conservancy not only preserves, owns and manages caves, but MAKC also has an extensive collection of cave and karst literature, grotto periodicals, foreign and general interest books for serious researchers.
The collection includes publications from North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe, and even a few from Antarctica, more than 60 countries at present.
Topical categories include geology, volcanology, education, biology, history, hydrology, science, environemtnal karst, mountaineering, vertical caving, rescue, photography, mineralogy, hydrogeology, management, geomorphology, paleontology, equipment, mapping, anthropology, archaeology, art, children’s literature, adult fiction, bats, cave diving and speleophilately.
There are more than 4,800 books and foreign and general interest periodicals.
The grotto and NSS-related newsletters and publications include more than 250 titles and 4,226 volumes. Most volumes have numerous editions within that publication year. Some were published quarterly, some monthly, some annually. Some have only one issue or are from only one year. Averaging this out to eight per year, this would be more than 30,000 periodicals.
MAKC members might also appreciate the more than 5,000 entries in an index of our quarterly publication, Karst Chronicle.
