Carl started caving in 1974 as a child with his dad in the undeveloped area of Laurel Caverns. During the early-mid 1980s he became much more active in caving first through a high school outdoors club, then through the Pittsburgh Grotto.<\/p>\n
Carl Joined the NSS in 1990, and the Loyalhanna grotto shortly thereafter. Carl has held the offices of Chairman, Vice Chair, and Editor of the Pittsburgh grotto. In addition to the NSS and local grottos, Carl is a member of the West Virginia Cave Conservancy and is a life member of the MAKC.<\/p>\n
Carl also now sponsors the same high school outdoors club which accelerated his caving activity in his youth. Of particular interest in addition to his youth group sponsorship are vertical caving and survey work, when he has time.<\/p>\n
Carl has two daughters, Courtenay and Emily, who enjoy caving with him several times a year.<\/p>\n
Carl works as an electrical engineer for Allegheny Power, now First Energy, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
