Billy Clay Pit
Billy Clay Pit is located in Pocahontas County West Virginia near Sharps Cave
and the Snowshoe ski resort. More pictures of the cave and the property can be seen on our Billy Clay Pictures page.
Doug Medville documented Billy Clay Pit as a half-mile long cave in 1976 and
noted a few leads were left unchecked. The recent efforts of the Pittsburgh
Grotto have documented nearly a mile of passage in this multi-drop sporting
cave.
Billy Clay Pit is significant in many ways -- it has a number of pristine
formations that are relatively untouched due to the cave's vertical entrance and
the low visitation. It has a number of bone deposits, which have and will be
studied.
All visitors to the cave are required to provide advance notice to the cave
and have a permit
as described in the management plan.
During caving-related events such as the VAR and OTR trips fill
quickly.
You can help by donating to the MAKC preserve. Donations are used for
property maintenance and insurance. Please see the Cave Sponsors page for more information. |
