The 100th Plate
In Memory of our friend - Al Hughes and the cave named after him. Jan 7, 1933 to Nov 1, 2003 A U.S. Army veteran, he was stationed in Panama in the 50's and in the medical corps. His duties were to study the insects in the treatment of malaria. These years were also the beginnings of his love for caving. He retired as a Fireman and traveled for more than 10 years, including many exploration trips in Brazil, before settling in Waynesville, NC. He joined Flittermouse Grotto in the early 90's and was honored as a Fellow of the NSS on July 27, 2001. He was my caving mentor when I began caving in 1993, and is now my caving angel. He was attached to the 1st Cavalry Division (1 CAV) Engineer Brigade (E) and couldn't resist taking a picture of this bumper number on one of the HMMW-V's.
