By Kim Metzgar
When Tom Metzgar conned J. R. Reich, Jr., of York, into remapping Bear Cave, Westmoreland County, a few years ago, we never dreamed it would be a
four-year project. Jay is best known for his compilation, Caves of Southeastern Pennsylvania (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of
Environmental Resources, Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey, General Geology Report 65). He’s also fond of Iceland and has mapped the longest lava
tube in that country. Once completed, Jay, of course, was looking for another survey project. The
re-map put Bear Cave as the state’s third longest cave at the time, and so we thought, why not the second-largest cave? Thus Jay and wife Susan, friends
Roy and Terry Garland, Dale Ibberson, Robert Miller, Walt Hamm, Tom Kennedy, Jim Kennedy, John Chenger, Tom and I, and a few others began another
multi-year project, which is now complete.
The MAKC is proud to announce that it has reached an agreement with Jay Reich, Jr., to be the sole publisher of the Laurel Caverns map, which will be
sold to cavers, as well as at the gift shop at Laurel Caverns. The map, is 18
by 36 inches, is printed in full color and is suitable for
framing. The MAKC’s cave conservation efforts will be boosted by every map sale.
The maps cost $4, plus 99 cents shipping and handling if mailed folded. E-mail for pricing info if you’d like it in a tube, or see us at
